At the centre of the land between Liskeard, Looe and Lostwithiel, Herodsfoot is a village nestled in the middle of the mainly coniferous Deerpark and Herodsfoot forests. Although much is used for timber, some lovely woodland walks exist as do many species of wildlife. The West Looe River has cut a steep valley here and walkers can follow it all the way to Looe itself on the coast. John Betjeman described it as "an inland Polperro in a wooded valley. Slate cottages with uneven roofs.."
A lead and silver mine functioned here for centuries and its All Saints church dates from 1850. An interesting piece of trivia tells us that Herodsfoot was one of the 'fortunate villages' whose men folk all returned from the world wars.
