Well Graham if you ran a business you'd want to make a profit so you could afford to feed yourself etc. Not all businesses are profitable, some go bust. When the go bust they're no longer able to provide whatever goods or services the once provided. If they didn't do anything people were prepared to pay for, then they'd immediately go bust. So any functioning business must be doing something people value and for a price they can afford, otherwise they couldn't exist. What is your problem with this? How do you make a living? Where do you put your savings? The choices you make directly or indirectly affect what happens in the wider world.
Btw the info at Companies House is either free or available for a few quid, at least it was last time I needed to do a search. Same with the Charities Commission and the Registry of Friendly Socs (who deal with Industrial and Provident Socs).

Trevorpen @ Assuming your tale isn't just something heard down the pub, then clearly the first thing to do is to find out where these houses are, check out their condition, whether they're lived in and so on. Then go into the filed accounts and follow the money ... Then maybe the Council minutes to see who approved the expenditure, and so on. If need be do an FOI. We live in a bureaucratic country, which means there will be paper trails.

As far as I know all the houses are empty - some partly trashed, 1 house was even a murder scene. Apparently the council made a contract with a company and has to pay it even though the properties are empty.

Now 'they're sitting' on £300,000 from giving no change from parking meters. This council is ripping us all off. They are giving the county a very bad name.

If the houses belong to the council and are empty and getting vandalised, then clearly they need to be squatted as soon as possible. That would at least put the council on the spot, and the chances are they'd license the occupants.

I've never seen the sense in parking charges, at least once the cost of creating the car park has been covered, but since I don't have a car it's not really my concern. If they rip off motorists (many being tourists??) then that should be less money on the Council Tax. The issue is not where the case comes from but where it goes, surely?
