World Family Names
Have a look at the spread of your family name across the planet: http://worldnames.publicprofiler.org/Main.aspx
Re: World Family Names
Thought I'd stick in my own very Cornish surname and a few other super-Cornish surnames. It came back with this for all:
Group: European_other Western
Subgroup: English
Language: English
Oh dear.
Out of the six or seven I stuck in, only one - 'Tresidder' came up Cornish but with a peculiar surprise:
Group: Anglo-Saxon
Subgroup: Cornish
Language: English
Extremely flawed!

As long as a hundred of us remain alive, we shall never give in to the domination of the English. We fight not for glory, not for wealth nor honours but only and alone for freedom, which no good man surrenders but with his life...
Re: World Family Names
ANGLO-SAXON!!!??? ENGLISH!!!??? Who the hell put that tripe together? Tresidder is about as Anglo-Saxon as Obama is. Is this just pure ignorance or something more sinister?

Re: World Family Names
Granted the classification system is all cockeyed and therefore deserves some well written -POLITE- and instructive correction sent to the site owners via email and letter. Get writing now. That being said its still very interesting to see the distribution of ones name around the globe.
Re: World Family Names
I agree, Fulub. Probably something for an 'officia'l representation.
Mine was quite a wide distribution and appears in some very unexpected locations, but the same feedback as Mark!

STOP THE CORNISH GENOCIDE! -
They declare their Cornishness with pride
Whilst oblivious to our genocide
That England imposes
With smiles and Red Roses
Where the innocents, so gullibly, reside.

Re: World Family Names
Fascinating! Mine is pretty well restricted to Britain: in the Cumbria-Northumbria area; in Mercia; and in the area of the old Dumnonia!

You!?
A Geordie?!

Re: World Family Names
The flaws don't only concern Cornish names. I tried a few Breton ones with... erm... hilarious consequences. Nedelek for example (or, in the official French spelling, Nedelec) came out as "Polish".
Re: World Family Names
God forbid, Shaggy. God forbid. But some nit with the same surname went there.
Re: World Family Names
And I pronounce final Rs. Which is why they're there. None of this idle eastern English speech (western Engish pronouce them, as well, even in Hampshire and Wiltshire).

Sorry, Marhak.Marhak wrote:And I pronounce final Rs. Which is why they're there. None of this idle eastern English speech (western Engish pronouce them, as well, even in Hampshire and Wiltshire).
Must be my mongrel ancestry.
A little like your own.
Re: World Family Names
Yes, seems to be Anglo-Saxon in origin and limited to Englsih-speaking areas.TGG wrote:

Re: World Family Names
Do you know TGG's surname? If you did, you certainly wouldn't say that. Or about Mark's. Let's just say they're both Cornish language surnames. My maternal surname, by the way, would be MacCuinneagain. Yep, Scots Gaelic.
Re: World Family Names
He is, of course, incorrect on both aspects of his latest failed attempt at being intelligent. More of an indicator of his IQ than anything of any value. It probably keeps him happy and everyone is entitled to be happy! Incidently, I did not appreciate that Serbia was English-speaking!
